Obese
I want to talk about the word obese.  Just like any word, obese is just a word.  For some reason, and it may be all the medical classes that I'm taking right now, the word doesn't phase me.  I'm obese.  You can call me obese, because clinically speaking I am.  It's not like calling me a fat piggy lard ass.  That would be offensive.  You could say, hey erica you are obese, and I would say yes I am.

Why do I bring this up.

I was having a conversation with a coworker the other day, and she says "How much weight can you gain?"
And I say "Well since I am obese, I can gain only up to 15 lbs according to the charts."
She replies with "Oh don't call yourself obese, that's not nice!"

She thought I was putting myself down.  I was stating a medical fact and a recommendation.  I'm sorry but to pretend that I'm not obese is just rediculous.  You CAN see me, ya know?  I'm clearly what the medical community would consider obese.  30 lbs lighter ...maybe not, but until that 30 comes off, I am who I am.

The point is a word is what you make of it.  Obesity is made negative by society, but I choose not to let that bother me.  If I wanted to not be obese, I know I could do something about it.  Right now as a pregnant woman, there is nothing I can do about it.  All I can do is make sure I eat the healthiest fooods I can stomach, and not gain too much weight for the baby.

In other news - we have our first appointment today!

Good for you to think about your health and your baby's health before worrying about how words are interpreted. I think you've got your priorities right.

I think that most people are offended by that term.
but most of those people are the same people who refuse to believe that they have medical problems or need to better take care of them selves.

When I was an NA, we'd get people in who top 600 lbs. they couldn't move on their own, or ANYTHING. confined to thier bed, because they couldn't or wouldnt see that they needed to take better care of them selves. Perhaps if someone had told them they were obese, they never woudl have become MORBIDLY obese......
who knows.

I think as long as you can move around, walk, and wipe your own ass....you're golden in my book!

There are plenty of perfectly good medical words that most people would react pretty poorly to.

But, I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask anyone wanting to go into detail about your pregnacy to refrain from objecting to your choice of medical terminology.

Well, some folks equate the word 'obese' with 'unattractive' or 'undesirable' when in truth they are quite exclusive of each other.

So I guess I can kinda see why she may have protested.
You are the first but certainly not the next two...
